Abstract
It was well known that ether increases the concentration of catecholamine in plasma due to release it from adrenal medulla. Some authors reported that thiopental sodium released the catecholamine from the stores in or near the vessel wall.
Long-term administration of prednisolone produced the various manifestation of Cushing¢¥s disease, including variable hypernatremia and hypokalemia, and hypertention.
In this paper, the influences of long-term administration of prednisolone on the change of blood pressure, blood sugar, and serum electrolyte levels of anesthetized rabbits by ether inhalation or thiopental sodium injection were investigated. The anesthetics were given in 2 devided doses at 20 minutes intervals to the 2 groups of experimental rabbits pretreated with prednisolone for 15 days and 30 days respectively.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. In normal rabbits, long-term administration of prednisolone for 30 days increased the blood pressure. The depression effect of blood pressure induced by first injection of thiopental sodium in the experimental rabbits was inhibited by prednisolone pretreatment for 15 days, but the depression effect of blood pressure induced by second injection of thiopental sodium was not inhibited.
2. The blood sugar concentration was markedly increased by administration of prednisolone for 30 days, and the increased blood sugar concentration induced by prednisolone pretreatment for 30 days was more accentuated by administration of ether or thiopental sodium.
3. In normal rabbit, the serum Na level was markedly increased by administrationi of prednisolone for 15 days, but the serum Ca level was decreased, and the serum K level was markedly decreased by prednisolone for 30 days. The serum Na level of experimental rabbits pretreated with prednisolone
for 15 days was markedly increased by thiopental sodium injection, but the other electrolytes were not affected. The serum K level of experimental rabbits pretreated with prednisolone for 30 days was markedly decreased by ether inhalation but other electrolytes were not affected.
